How we compare prices (Methodology)
  • Data sources: We fetch live pricing from participating dealer product pages and/or APIs.
  • Refresh cadence: Prices and spot updates sync on a schedule (typically every hour). Each page shows a timestamp when the prices were last refreshed.
  • Payment normalization: Rankings default to bank/ACH pricing. Where dealers publish multiple payment prices, you should verify the price on the dealer website based on the selected payment method.
  • All-in price: Due to differences in sales tax, shipping costs and payment method adjustment, we show item price and note what’s included.
  • Premium over spot: Premium = The amount charged by the dealer, minus the current spot per unit for this specific product.
  • Stock handling: Typically, we only show prices if the dealer has the item available for sale on their website. Pre-Orders are typically labeled. Sometimes, dealers will list items as in-stock and available for sale when they are on backorder; out-of-stock offers are de-prioritized or hidden.
  • Independence & disclosure: Dealers cannot pay to change rankings. Some outbound links are affiliate/sponsored; they’re marked and use rel="sponsored". This does not affect how prices are displayed.
  • Corrections: See something off? Contact us and we will do our best to fix the issue quickly.

Expert Notes

The wartime nickel was introduced on October 8,1942, in order to supply nickel to the war efforts. With the onset of World War II, the U.S. military had a high demand for metals. A bigger mint mark was added on the coin's reverse, above the dome of Monticello, to make it easy to identify war nickels.

War Nickels are an inexpensive and affordable way to stack silver. Each Jefferson Nickel from this era was minted with 35% silver. A full roll of 40 nickels contains $2 Face Value and roughly 2.25 troy ounces of silver. These coins are commonly bought, sold, and traded for their melt value, sometimes below it.

$2 FV Bankroll Wartime Nickel Highlights

  • Standard bankroll amount of 40 nickels.
  • Each coin carries a face value of 5 cents.
  • Approximate silver weight: 2.25 oz.
  • Composition: 35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese.
  • Minted from 1942 to 1945.

These nickels got their name because the raw materials used in coins were needed for the armor plating of tanks in World War II.

These coins were minted until 1945 when the war ended. Metal prices adjusted after the war, and citizens saved these coins because of the metal combination.

Melting these coins is legal. However, due to the inclusion of manganese, they are difficult to refine. These coins are traded only for their intrinsic value.

They are easy to identify from other coins in a pile. The reverse (back) of the coin shows the mint mark in a large, prominent font in the center of the dome on the rear.
