About Platinum Bullion

Platinum is rarer than gold — annual mining output is a fraction of gold production, with the majority sourced from South Africa and Russia. Unlike gold and silver, platinum's price is driven significantly by industrial demand, primarily for use in catalytic converters, hydrogen fuel cell technology, and chemical refining equipment. That industrial dependence creates price dynamics distinct from monetary metals: platinum can trade at a discount to gold for extended periods when industrial demand softens, and recover sharply when it tightens.

For investors, platinum offers portfolio diversification beyond the gold-silver relationship. Retail platinum prices are quoted at spot plus a dealer premium. Premiums on platinum tend to run higher than silver on a percentage basis due to lower minting volumes and a thinner secondary market. Coins and bars are the two primary investment formats; rounds are not widely produced in platinum.

Platinum Coins

Investment platinum coins are issued by a small number of sovereign mints. The American Platinum Eagle (US Mint), introduced in 1997, is the most recognized platinum coin in North America and carries a $100 face value. The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf (Royal Canadian Mint) and Platinum Britannia (Royal Mint) round out the primary sovereign options. All three are struck from 1 oz of .9995 fine platinum. Fractional sizes exist but are produced in lower volumes and typically carry meaningfully higher per-ounce premiums.

Platinum Bars

Platinum bars offer the most cost-efficient access to the metal on a per-ounce basis. The 1 oz platinum bar is the most liquid size, available from refiners including PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, and Credit Suisse. Larger sizes (10 oz, 100 oz) carry lower per-ounce premiums but represent significant capital commitment and trade in a thinner secondary market than comparable gold or silver bars. All investment-grade platinum bars are stamped with weight, purity (.9995 fine), and refiner hallmark.
