Palladium is the rarest of the four primary investment metals. Global supply is concentrated in Russia and South Africa, and annual mine production is a fraction of gold output. Demand is overwhelmingly industrial — primarily from the automotive sector, where palladium is used in three-way catalytic converters for gasoline-powered engines. This supply-demand dynamic has produced some of the most extreme price moves in the precious metals complex: palladium traded above $3,000/oz in 2022 before retreating sharply as supply constraints eased.
The retail palladium market is thinner than gold, silver, or platinum. Fewer dealers stock palladium products, bid/ask spreads tend to be wider, and secondary market resale requires more planning than the other metals. Investors who choose palladium typically do so for its industrial supply story and exposure to automotive and emerging technology demand.
Sovereign palladium coins are rare. The American Palladium Eagle, issued by the US Mint since 2017, is the primary investment coin for North American buyers — struck from 1 oz of .9995 fine palladium with a $25 face value. The Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf, produced by the Royal Canadian Mint from 2005 to 2007 and now available only on the secondary market, is the other widely recognized sovereign option. Due to limited production runs, both coins can trade at significant premiums over spot in tight market conditions.
Palladium bars offer the most direct, lowest-premium exposure to palladium. The 1 oz palladium bar from refiners such as PAMP Suisse and Valcambi is the most liquid size. Larger format bars (10 oz, 100 gram) are available but trade in a very thin market outside of institutional buyers. Assay certification is particularly important for palladium resale, as fewer dealers will accept unauthenticated bars without retesting.
