20 Pesos Design
The central motif of the reverse shows a finely engraved rendering of the Aztec Sun Stone (Piedra del Sol), often called the “Aztec Calendar.” At the center is the face of Tonatiuh, the sun deity, with tongue shown as a stone blade, surrounded by the four prior suns (eras) and concentric rings of day signs. Inscriptions for the denomination (“VEINTE PESOS”) and the gold declaration “15 Gr. ORO PURO” are placed to left/right of the stone.
The obverse displays the classic eagle devouring a serpent while perched on a nopal cactus rising from a lake—symbol of Tenochtitlán. Inscriptions include “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS”, which arcs around; a wreath of oak and laurel ties the base.
Restrikes vs Original Mintage
Original issues from 1917–1921 often show slightly softer radial detail in the outer rings. While the 1959-dated restrikes have crisper ring lines and beadlike denticles from fresher hubs. The mint has issued restrikes with most bearing the date of 1959.
