How we compare prices (Methodology)
  • Data sources: We fetch live pricing from participating dealer product pages and/or APIs.
  • Refresh cadence: Prices and spot updates sync on a schedule (typically every hour). Each page shows a timestamp when the prices were last refreshed.
  • Payment normalization: Rankings default to bank/ACH pricing. Where dealers publish multiple payment prices, you should verify the price on the dealer website based on the selected payment method.
  • All-in price: Due to differences in sales tax, shipping costs and payment method adjustment, we show item price and note what’s included.
  • Premium over spot: Premium = The amount charged by the dealer, minus the current spot per unit for this specific product.
  • Stock handling: Typically, we only show prices if the dealer has the item available for sale on their website. Pre-Orders are typically labeled. Sometimes, dealers will list items as in-stock and available for sale when they are on backorder; out-of-stock offers are de-prioritized or hidden.
  • Independence & disclosure: Dealers cannot pay to change rankings. Some outbound links are affiliate/sponsored; they’re marked and use rel="sponsored". This does not affect how prices are displayed.
  • Corrections: See something off? Contact us and we will do our best to fix the issue quickly.

Expert Notes

$5 Half Eagle Gold Coin Liberty Head Design

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head half eagle coin was minted between 1838 and 1907.

The nostalgic design is from an era when the US economy was on a gold-standard, along with much of the world.

Stacking half-eagle gold coins from this period gives some historical interest to your investment while providing you with financial peace-of-mind.

After private ownership of gold was outlawed during the Great Depression many of these coins were converted into jewelry, which is most cases was exempt. There were many Pre-1933 gold coins that were transformed into jewelry which remained legal during the years that gold was banned.

Almost all circulated half-eagle gold coins have some numismatic premium above the melt value even after they've been cleaned or removed from being repurposed as jewelry.

Each coin contains .2419 oz of pure gold alloyed with a small amount of copper for rigidity to withstand circulation.

Reverse: Displays the heraldic eagle design with a shield on its chest. Surrounding the eagle is "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination

Obverse: Shows Liberty, facing left, encircled by 13 stars representing the original colonies with the word "LIBERTY" on her hair band

Conditions will vary by retailer and the selection will be dealers' choice. Some may included cleaned, ex-jewelry, worn or circulated coins.
