French 100 Francs Gold Lucky Angel Coin
The Lucky Angel design by Augustin Dupre is often considered to be one of the most beautifully designed coins ever created.
The obverse of the coin shows a standing genie writing a new French constitution into a blank book that is lurched on a stone pedestal. To the right of the book is a gallic rooster facing leftward towards the angel. The words "Republique Francaise" are inscribed above the winged angel.
The reverse is inscribed around the top with the words "LIBERTY EGALITY FRATERNITY", fundamental core values of French society. In the center is a circular wreath design that contains the face value and year-date of minting.
The mint mark of "A" on the bottom of the reverse is the indication that these coins were produced at the Paris Mint.
These are a true work of coinage art, and they are far less common in this denomination and size.
About the 100 Franc Gold Coin
The first 100 franc gold coin was minted in France in 1801. They were re-issued again in 1848 when the franc was readopted as the national currency. The denomination was reestablished in 1967 for commemorative coins that are issued by the mint.
