2026 Gold Eagle Semiquincentennial: All Sizes, Specs & Pricing

2026 Gold Eagle Semiquincentennial: All Sizes, Specs & Pricing

The 2026 American Gold Eagle is the first Gold Eagle ever struck with a dual date. Every collector version — proof and enhanced uncirculated — carries “1776 ~ 2026” on the obverse and a Liberty Bell privy mark with the numeral “250,” marking the U.S. Semiquincentennial. Standard bullion Gold Eagles for 2026 do not carry the privy mark or dual date.

All four proof denominations (1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz) went on sale March 5, 2026 at the U.S. Mint. A four-coin proof set and a 1 oz enhanced uncirculated version are also available. First-week proof sales totaled 27,979 coins — the strongest debut since 2023.

Design

The obverse carries Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Standing Liberty, the same design adapted from his 1907 $20 Double Eagle that has appeared on Gold Eagles since 1986. The reverse features Jennie Norris’ eagle portrait, introduced with the Type II redesign in 2021. Both sides are produced from laser-engraved master dies (replacing the traditional hubbing process starting in 2021), which produce sharper detail in the devices and lettering.

The two Semiquincentennial additions — the “1776 ~ 2026” dual date and the Liberty Bell “250” privy mark — are one-year-only features. This is only the second time the Gold Eagle has carried a privy mark; the first was the 2020-W V75, which commemorated the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. All 2026 collector versions are struck at the West Point Mint and carry the “W” mint mark.

Specifications & Pricing

All Gold Eagles are 22-karat: 91.67% gold, 3% silver, 5.33% copper. Issue prices adjust weekly based on the Mint’s precious metals pricing matrix. The figures below reflect launch-day pricing from March 5, 2026.

The four-coin proof set is capped at 15,000 — the tightest limit in the lineup. Each set ships in the Mint’s official presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Proof vs. Enhanced Uncirculated vs. Bullion

The Mint offers three finishes for the 2026 Gold Eagle, each serving a different buyer:

Proof coins are struck multiple times on polished planchets with polished dies, producing a mirror-field / frosted-device contrast. They come in OGP with a Certificate of Authenticity, carry the privy mark and dual date, and have hard product limits. This is the collector version.

Enhanced Uncirculated is a new finish for Gold Eagles in 2026. It bridges the gap between proof and standard bullion — improved surface quality, the privy mark, and the dual date, but at a lower premium than a proof. The 1 oz enhanced uncirculated (26EH) is available from the Mint.

Bullion Gold Eagles are the investment version — standard finish, no privy mark, no dual date, sold through authorized dealers near spot price. Bullion production is not capped.

Which Size to Buy

The 1 oz proof has the most secondary-market liquidity and the lowest per-ounce premium of the four proof sizes. It’s the standard choice for both collectors and investors. Fractional sizes (1/2, 1/4, 1/10 oz) carry higher per-ounce premiums but lower total outlay, making them accessible entry points. The four-coin set appeals to collectors who want all denominations in coordinated packaging — its 15,000-set cap is also the most constrained product limit in the program.

As of mid-May 2026, all sizes remain available at the U.S. Mint. Prices adjust weekly with the gold spot price, so check current Mint pricing before ordering.

FAQ

Do 2026 bullion Gold Eagles have the privy mark?
No. The Liberty Bell privy mark and 1776–2026 dual date appear only on proof and enhanced uncirculated versions. Standard bullion Gold Eagles carry the single date and no privy mark.

How much gold is in each size?
Each Gold Eagle contains its stated weight in pure gold: 1 oz = 1.0000 troy oz, 1/2 oz = 0.5000, 1/4 oz = 0.2500, 1/10 oz = 0.1000. The total coin weight is slightly higher because of the silver and copper in the 22-karat alloy.

How does the Mint’s dynamic pricing work?
The Mint adjusts Gold Eagle MSRPs weekly based on the London gold fix. When gold rises, MSRP rises; when gold falls, MSRP falls. The Mint maintains a fixed premium spread above spot to cover production costs.

Is the 2026 Proof Gold Eagle IRA-eligible?
American Gold Eagles are specifically named as IRA-eligible under 26 U.S.C. § 408(m)(3)(A). Proof coins are typically held outside IRAs because the numismatic premium is irrelevant in that context. Confirm with your custodian.
